Dick Dale wasn't nicknamed "King of the Surf Guitar" for nothing: he pretty much invented the style single-handedly, and no matter who copied or expanded upon his blueprint, he remained the fieriest, most technically gifted musician the genre ever produced. Dale's pioneering use of Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies (learned organically through his familial heritage) was among the first in any genre of American popular music, and predated the teaching of such "exotic" scales in guitar-shredder academies by two decades.

"His music is simple to the point of being stripped down, as if bearing it all was the only way to get our attention. The Spartan band behind him was made up of a drummer, a bassist, two keyboardists, and Cope on guitar. A mix of hip-hop, folk, and blues his songs are mostly beats - mix bass drum, high hat, snare, clap track and repeat - buffed smooth by a haggard, road-weary voice. Uncommon chords for texture and keyboards for lift." - Joseph Johns

"With a dynamic three-guitar lineup, Drive-By Truckers are able to keep Southern rock alive and vital: but whatever you do, don't call them a country band. While elements of traditional country exist and even rule at times, their love of and respect for classic rock is clearly evident - and all is cooled down with alt-country subtlety." Toby McKeehan, or tobyMac, as he is professionally known, grew up in northern Virginia suburbs in the shadow of Washington, D.C., where he fell in love with rap and hip hop. While attending Liberty University at Lynchburg, VA, in the mid 1980s, he met Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith (aka/ Kevin Max), and the three friends formed the highly influential Christian pop group dc talk, which mixed elements of gospel, grunge and hip hop into an immensely successful hybrid. When dc talk ended in 1999, Mac went solo, releasing the well-received Momentum in 2001. A mixture of urban rock and hip hop, Momentum garnered five Dove Awards and a Grammy nomination, and spawned the remix album, Re: Mix Momentum, which saw light in 2003. Following pretty much the same formula, and even adding in a little dancehall reggae, McKeehan released Welcome to Diverse City in 2004. The formula worked again: the album landed Tobymac a Dove Award for Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year. Welcome to the Diverse City received its own album-length remix in August 2005 with the release of Renovating->Diverse City. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

Organizers announced country music stars such as Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, Brooks and Dunn, Keith Urban, Kellie Pickler, Jason Aldean, Jake Owen, David Nail, Gloriana and Justin Moore are all headed to Baton Rouge for the Bayou Country Superfest.

The old cajun "Ayeee" is about to be replaced with a country "Yee-haw." For two years, Baton Rouge officials worked to bring the Bayou Country Superfest to the Capital City. Next Memorial Day weekend, the city will host some of the biggest stars it has ever attracted.

Several people are predicting the Bayou Country Superfest will make Baton Rouge a major travel destination. It will feature 10 stars in two nights. Hang on Baton Rouge. In the words of Alan Jackson, "we're goin' country."

Paul Arrigo with the Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau says his office is always asked why big acts don't come to Baton Rouge, but they won't be able to find a show much bigger than this one.

Quint Davis, the festival producer, announced the stars that will appear. Baton Rouge's country music fest will be one of the last times fans will see Brooks and Dunn perform LIVE together. Concerts with Kenny Chesney reportedly sell out in a matter of minutes. Producers say singing in Tiger Stadium will be the first time Taylor Swift has taken on such a large a venue. She headlines opening night, along with Keith Urban.

"This will be an event that will be a game changer for Baton Rouge," Davis said. "That will become a major tourism, leisure, travel destination on Memorial Day weekend."
